The Vampires

Sat 23 Mar

ARIA & Australian Music Prize short-listed jazz-world-roots The Vampires are bringing their powerful melodic invention to The Music Lounge in Wollongong.

Quickly becoming an icon on the Australian jazz scene, The Vampires uniquely blend soulful jazz, old-school reggae and South American music with natural charm. Combining adventurous improvisation, sophisticated compositions and an uncanny flow of dialogue between the sax-trumpet frontline, The Vampires have developed a style of their own; effortlessly mixing influences from all corners of the world. With one eye to the future of Australian music and one nod to the past with echoes of Bernie McGann and The Catholics, along with inspiration from Bob Marley and Ornette Coleman, The Vampires’ music stands the test of repeated listening.

The Vampires consist of saxophonist Jeremy Rose, trumpeter Nick Garbett, bassist Alex Boneham and drummer Alex Masso. They have released five albums and toured relentlessly around Australia, Europe and the UK. They have been described by US Downbeat magazine as “worldly, talented” and their last album has been described by The Guardian UK as “seductive, genre-hopping creativity”.

  • These Vampires are very much alive - Sydney Morning Herald
  • One of my favourite albums of the year… beautifully constructed melody sounded so classic, so perfect, that it had already become deeply ingrained in my memory. This one’s a real winner. - David Faulkner, Chairman of the Australian Music Prize and lead singer of the Hoodoo Gurus
  • Creativity overflows in every track. - Jazz & Beyond
  • A distinctive gumbo that was more eminently accessible, grooved harder and created a bigger sound than seemed possible. - All About Jazz
