MERRIGONGX 2024 Artist Call Out

Innovative | Independent | In-development

Championing a future for Australian art that is innovative, inclusive and diverse, MERRIGONGX is a platform for a new generation of artists taking creative risks. With a focus on local, emerging artists and experimentation, applications are now open for our 2024 MERRIGONGX Program.

Merrigong is a vibrant theatre company – producing, presenting and touring exciting contemporary theatre and supporting the development of a diverse range of local independent performance- makers. As the only professional theatre company in the Illawarra region, we believe it is our responsibility to provide a context and home for local artists (including artists who live elsewhere but have a strong connection to the region) to develop their practice with us.

Merrigong is committed to supporting the development and presentation of the work of independent artists through new and established performance platforms and development opportunities. We are currently programming for our 2024 MERRIGONGX season and are looking for artists across a range of disciplines who are pushing for the new, experimental and contemporary. We encourage applications from multi-artform and interdisciplinary practices as well as site specific works that can reactivate and revitalise unused spaces in IPAC and the Wollongong Arts Precinct.

Merrigong will support the journey of these projects by commissioning the development and/or presentation of each work. There are two levels of support through MERRIGONGX:

1. Development: New work that requires development space, time and mentorship.

2. Presentation Season: New work that has been developed at/with Merrigong and is ready for its first season

Selection Criteria

Curatorial Vision

The artistic team selects work for development and presentation if:

· The artist/group is local or has a local connection;

· The work is new;

· The work extends the art form by engaging with contemporary theatre practice;

· The work provides a new experience for our audiences.

· The work addresses Merrigong’s Artistic Vision

· The work is representational of the Illawarra’s diverse community. Merrigong aims to strengthen engagement with First Nations and People of Colour, including the Asian, Middle Eastern, Pacific Islander and African diaspora communities in our local region.

How to Apply

  1. Read our Support for Artists page and decide which level of support your project needs. Please note that only work that has been developed as a part of a previous MERRIGONGX season can move on to a Presentation Season.
  2. Complete all sections of the Application Form
  3. Collate and attach your written supporting material (e.g. images, artist CV’s, diagrams, venue layouts, script samples, brochures etc.) into a single pdf (10MB max.) or Googledrive/Dropbox link. We strongly encourage visual material if available. Images submitted by successful candidates will be used to promote their work unless new images are provided.
  4. Submit your MERRIGONGX 2024 Artist Application by midnight Tuesday 12 September 2023.

We are committed to providing an inclusive culture and program where all our artists are valued and recognised for their unique qualities, ideas and perspectives. We encourage applications from First Nations people, people with disability, people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, mature age and LGBQTI people.

Please note: all projects submitted remain the property of the independent artist/group, whether or not they are selected. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact:
