There’s something so fundamental and visceral about live theatre – gathering to witness the telling of a story by someone who’s right there in front of us. It strikes me as somewhat ironic that an artform famed for its artifice, for its ‘smoke and mirrors’, for its ability to convince people to suspend their disbelief, may well end up being the last bastion of ‘realness’ in a world full of AI deception.

If you’re anything like me, these days you often find yourself reeling from the onslaught of AI – from the relentless algorithm that feeds us a steady stream of the fake, a smorgasbord of concocted content intended to outrage, amaze, confuse and disorient us. In a world where it’s increasingly difficult to know what or who is actually real, where are we supposed to turn? To the theatre, I say.

Live performance offers us something else – a precious opportunity to gather with others and experience something that, for all its ability to conjure illusions, is undeniably real. That actor, singer, dancer on the stage is there in front of your very eyes. There is no CGI, no deepfakes, no algorithm, and also no pause or rewind button. This is happening right now, in this place, at this time, and if you’re not in the room you will miss it.

So, this year, while we will bring you our fair share of theatre magic, inviting you to suspend your disbelief and see before you everything from a singing, tap-dancing horse, to the teeming streets of Colombo, from ancient gods walking amongst us, to a talking, hungry, blood-thirsty plant, I’d urge you to think about how special and fundamentally real the theatre space can be. Perhaps, in a world drowning in a cacophony of fakery and superficial connectedness, the theatre will be one of the last places left for real human connection.

So I invite you to the theatre, to be with us right here. right now. together.
