At the heart of all great theatre is deep collaboration. The magical one or two hours of the show you see on stage is the final manifestation of a long, often complex process of creative, technical and logistical collaboration. Usually, dozens of people have worked for months, and some of them for years, as a work is created, crafted, built, rehearsed, and finally performed for you. Writers, directors, actors, costume and set designers, lighting and sound designers, technicians, set builders, costume makers, stage managers, producers, and possibly many others have worked tirelessly to create the final performance you see.

For this year’s Merrigong Season, we wanted to celebrate that collaboration by giving you a glimpse into the art of a special group of these creative collaborators — the costume designers. Their imagination, creativity and craft are such essential elements of bringing to life the characters performed for you on stage. In 2026, you’ll see some wonderful costumes on stage. From Tony Award-winner Marg Horwell’s incredible creations for My Brilliant Career, to the extraordinary Possum Skin Cloak that Kirli Saunders dons in Yandha Djanbay (Go Slowly), from Ana Inés Jabares-Pita’s witty reimagination of Georgian excesses (with a nod to previous adaptations) for Pride and Prejudice (sort of)*, to Jennifer Irwin’s amazing contemporary creations for Bangarra Dance Theatre’s FuturesPast, the performers on our stages will certainly be “Dressed for Success”.

But of all the collaborators that give of themselves to create the experience that is live theatre, there’s one who is perhaps the most essential — that’s you, the audience. Without you as a collaborator, bringing yourself to the theatre with all your imagination, your intellect and enthusiasm, the whole enterprise is meaningless. A great performance needs a great audience. So, it’s our hope that you’ll embrace our 2026 season as a full collaborator in the creative process. We don’t actually care what you wear to the theatre.
