Inspired by the acclaimed Illawarra documentary film
Inspired by the acclaimed Illawarra documentary film, ‘Women of Steel’ (Shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Prize, 2021) Steel City Strings and percussionist Claire Edwardes (Ensemble Offspring) premiere a brand-new concerto for percussion and string orchestra by Australian composer, Natalie Williams. The work captures the sights and sounds of the Illawarra Steelworks and pays homage to the 18-year battle of the Jobs for Women campaign with Australia’s most powerful firm, BHP between 1980-1994. In addition, Steel City Strings revisits the powerful ‘Chamber Symphony’ by Dmitri Shostakovich’s (1906-1975).
The program also features rarely performed works by recent Eastern European composers including Serbian composers Aleksandra Vrebalov, and Pavle Popović as well as Macedonian composer Dragan Šuplevski.
Natalie William’s percussion concerto has been commissioned by Steel City Strings with work development funding from Create NSW.
