The Song Company – Mind Over Matter

Sat 24 Aug

A zany musical comedy surrounded by vocal arrangements of 1980s pop hits

Return to the ’80s with a chamber comic opera featuring a computer virus, five courageous singers, two pianists… and two lifts with minds of their own. Directed by Leonie Cambage, with music and words by Antony Pitts, Mind Over Matter presents man against machine in a musical comedy from the golden age of pop.

The Song Company’s forthcoming national tour is a chance to visit the lighter side of musical history with a program of ’80s songs in vocal arrangements by Antony and framing his unique musical comedy, Mind Over Matter, which brings together the zany, fast-moving action of an operatic farce and the driven rhythmic and harmonic patterns of the ’80s. There’s a darker side too, to the prescient story of a global company (B.A.B.E.L.) with a systemic grip on the world: the emergence of an Artificial Intelligence out of control which opts to upload itself into the human character Mabel. Along the way the battling characters of Rime and Reezon change identities, converse with the B.A.B.E.L. skyscraper’s two lifts, and are confronted by the affections of a worker called Anna, as well as the mysterious ways of The Guard who lives on the Ground Floor but doesn’t seem bound by the ordinary dimensions of the building.

This production features high-energy direction by Leonie Cambage, choreographed by Broadway powerhouse Leslie Bell, witty inspired set and costume design by Isabel Hudson, and accompanied with four hands at one piano by Sally Whitwell and Antony Pitts. Mind Over Matter promises to be a show to entertain across the generations, and to get the feet tapping and the tunes bringing back and making new memories!
