Made From Scratch – November

Sat 30 Nov

A multi-artform performance night offering artists space and support to test new ideas in front of a live audience.

Here, experimentation is key. This event will showcase new works from local artists across performance, film, stand-up comedy, spoken word, poetry and music.

  • Spoken word poet Elliot York Cameron. Teaching artist and finalist of several major slam poetry competitions across the state. Elliot explores the idea of sonhood in a poetic journey about the apple that longed to fall far from the tree.
  • Comedy performance by Jamal Abdul. This bold young man will leave a lasting impression as he explains the funny side of living with a disability.
  • A screening of Lhaleska Urdanivia’s short film Insomnia. This artist is currently working with photography, filmmaking and sound to bring an immersive art installation about insomnia and the connection with the subconscious.
  • Stand-up comedy by Martin Henchion, inspired by the people and places around the Illawarra from the perspective of a migrant Irish man.
  • Singer-songwriter Elana Stone and writer and sound artist Tom Hogan join forces to perform the tragic comedy musical preview of Mount Hopeless: A Burke & Wills Musical due to premiere in 2020.
  • Artists of the Well Fair Project will perform a hybrid story presentation. This project was designed to give rise and platform to the voice of artists who have endured some form of hardship or long-term unemployment in their life.
  • Journalist, poet and playwright Joel Burrows presents A Christmas Special, a story that examines the intersection between fantasy and routine. Questioning what makes family, what defines friendships, and all that heartwarming stuff.
  • Writer, director and singer Malika Reese will perform a musical retelling of love triumphing over adversity. Set in Mississippi and Texas in the mid-1800’s, Mailka’s piece is based on a true story of her families journey.
  • Our resident stand-up, funny man Samwise Hemmings will be master of ceremonies for the evening.
