Arrebato Ensemble with Chachy Peñalver

Fri 2 Aug

Contemporary flamenco with edge

Arrebato Ensemble create passionately moving performances that combine incisive ensemble playing, masterful solos and the beauty and power of flamenco dance.

They are led by long-time musical collaborators, the acclaimed flamenco guitarist Greg Alfonzetti and Damian de Boos-Smith (cello and guitar), and joined by Byron Mark (cajon, percussion and piano), and dancer Chachy Peñalver, founder and director of The Sydney Flamenco Studio.

Arrebato in Spanish means “a sudden and intense burst of emotion” a fitting description of their latest album “Sofia’s Dream” which is both beautifully haunting and humorously joyful.

Even the group’s previous album drew critical acclaim from John Shand describing that while their music “moves from pure flamenco in favour of a more contemporary style, the spirit, a dramatic, sexually charged and haughty sadness, remains intact.” (Sydney Morning Herald).

After their first album won Best World Music Artist at the MusicOz Awards what soon followed was performances at WOMADAdelaide, Sydney Festival, Apollo Bay Music Festival, Sydney Opera House and the International Australian Festival of Chamber Music.
