An invitation to a world of great theatre …

The magic of theatre is that it gives us a window on the world. We sit in a darkened theatre, here in Wollongong, and we are transported to different places, we hear stories of different people, we are exposed to new ideas and new perspectives on life. And when the magic really works, of course, we find that we have actually gained a new perspective on our own life, our community, our place in the world.

With this in mind, I couldn’t be happier to invite you to experience a world of great theatre with us in 2009. It will be a year filled with great stories and extraordinarily talented artists. Together we’ll see some very special international theatre - from the USA, Kahlil Ashanti brings us his acclaimed comedy based on his life story, and we’ll be treated to two extraordinary companies, Iceland’s phenomenal Vesturport Theatre, and the stunning French-Canadian circus company Les 7 Doigts de la Main (The Seven Fingers), who have thrilled audiences around the globe.

It’s also a year of big laughs, with several comedies that have been huge hits in London’s West End – such as the Hitchcock spoof The 39 Steps, and the charming contemporary odd-couple comedy, Elling.

As usual, our season will feature some of Australia’s finest companies, including Sydney Theatre Company, Bell Shakespeare and Bangarra Dance Theatre.

But our season couldn’t claim to be a true window on the world, if it wasn’t also a window on our own little corner of that world – Wollongong! 4 Plays about Wollongong, the first of our commissioned works to be produced, promises an evening in the theatre that will make us laugh, think, and maybe wince just a little, at four different stories, from four different playwrights, all about the place we call home.

We’ve never had a more diverse, exciting year of theatre here at Merrigong. I hope you’ll join us for it.
