Everyone has times of feeling like an outsider, whether it’s with friends, romantic relationships, the workplace, or any part of the human experience. How can we use the arts to experience the unknown, break down barriers, and bring outsiders ‘in’?
Sharing their insights will be special guests The Outside Man Director Anne-Louise Rentell and Musical Director Daryl Wallis, Michael Norris, Manager Sports & Recreation Services with The Disability Trust, and members of The Outside Man cast.
Anne-Louise is an independent theatre maker, creative producer, arts consultant and freelance artist with more than 20 years of experience in the performing arts, who is enormously respected for both her gentle, personable approach and her passion for giving diverse artists a voice. From 2003 - 2015 she worked at Merrigong Theatre Company, where she developed a program providing people professional practice opportunities to aspiring theatre-makers through a partnership between The Disability Trust and Merrigong. She directed The Man Who Dreamt the Stars, the company’s first production in association with The Trust, and continues to teach and coordinate the Trust’s weekly Altogether Drama classes.
Daryl Wallis is a composer, keyboard musician, vocal coach and musical director. He has composed music for numerous professional theatre productions, and was recently the sound designer for Landscape with Monsters (A CIRCA and Merrigong Theatre Company co-production). He performs with jazz/soul singer Ali Hughes as Ali & The Thieves, and are about to commence a NSW tour of their show Leonard Cohen Koans.
Michael Norris has been with The Disability Trust for 16 years and is responsible for a variety of programs throughout the Illawarra & Shoalhaven regions that focus of creating new pathways for participants to achieve their goals.
The Outside Man ensemble is made up of members of the Altogether Drama Group. Altogether Drama is a theatre group for people with an intellectual disability established by The Disability Trusts’ Recreation Illawarra Service. It has been in operation for more than 20 years. Since 2009, The Disability Trust has partnered with Merrigong Theatre Company to provide opportunities for Altogether Drama participants to develop their practice as artists, support the development of excellence in arts and disability programs; and seed new disability-led theatre projects.
