Opera Carnivale: Mahagonny Songspiel
Part of The Spiegeltent Wollongong Season
29 Apr – 29 Apr
It’s not opera as usual…
Mahagonny Songspiel is a hilarious take on the decline of a great culture - the state of "Mahagonny". The leaders attack truth and the media, and the citizens become increasingly nauseous in the wide, brown land. This brilliant short satire by Brecht/Weill features an 11 piece band, famous jazz inspired tunes, and a young team of professionals pushing the boundaries between opera and cabaret.
Directed by Dr Narelle Yeo, with the generous support of the Kurt Weill Foundation, this collaboration between Opera Carnivale, Wollongong and Sydney Conservatoriums features renowned soprano Rachel Bate.
This performance is funded in part by the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, Inc., New York, NY.
“It’s hugely theatrical. It’s very immersive. A lot of the show takes place in and around the audience. We’re sort of defying the limits of opera.” - Rachel Bate
