Merrigong appoints new Artistic Development Manager
Merrigong Theatre Company is pleased to announce that well-known Sydney theatre-maker and arts manager Leland Kean will be joining the Company as Artistic Development Manager.
Leland has more than 15 years of experience as a director, producer, dramaturg and arts manager. Over the last 10 years, as Artistic Director of renowned Sydney independent theatre company Tamarama Rock Surfers (TRS), he has been responsible for nurturing numerous Sydney independent artists and theatre companies, as well as directing many successful productions for the company, both at their original home at the Old Fitzroy Hotel and, after successfully negotiating to move the company to a new home, at the Bondi Pavilion Theatre, which he has managed for TRS since 2011.
The role of Artistic Development Manager replaces the role of Artistic Associate at Merrigong, a position recently vacated by Anne-Louise Rentell after 12 years with the Company. As Artistic Development Manager, Leland will work closely with Artistic Director / CEO Simon Hinton in shaping Merrigong's artistic programs, commissioning, developing and producing new works for the Company, and managing the Company’s programs of support for independent theatre artists.
Simon Hinton expressed delight in this appointment, saying “We are excited to have a theatre-maker and arts manager of Leland’s calibre joining our team. His commitment to the development of new Australian work, coupled with his experience as a producer and in nurturing artists in the independent sector, will make him an invaluable asset to the company as we move forward in serving the artists and audiences of our community. I have every confidence that he will further develop on the extraordinary work that Anne-Louise Rentell has done over the last 12 years at Merrigong, during which time she developed and encouraged countless local artists, and worked with our team to build significant producing capability for the Company. Leland’s appointment represents another exciting development in Merrigong’s ongoing journey from managing a venue to becoming a vital centre for theatre-making and artist development in regional Australia”.
Leland will commence his role with Merrigong on Wednesday February 4 2015.

Merrigong Receives Funding for Community Projects
Merrigong has been successful in receiving funding for three community projects; the further development of a new mixed abilities theatre work, a series of workshops and a rehearsed reading of popular local playwright Wendy Richardson’s much-loved play, Windy Gully.
The NSW Government through Arts NSW and Ageing, Disability and Home Care confirmed funding support for the development of our mixed abilities theatre work and a series of workshops, both in collaboration with the Illawarra Disability Trust. The Star Project (working title) involves two performers from the Illawarra Disability Trust’s Altogether Drama group, Rachel Murphy and Philip Prentice, and professional local performers, Alicia Battestini and Drayton Morley.
The Dendrobium Community Enhancement Program is supporting our rehearsed play-reading of Wendy Richardson’s muchloved play, Windy Gully, on Saturday 3 November at 2.30pm. Wendy’s depiction of village life in Mt Kembla at the time of the historic mining disaster 110 years ago has made a significant contribution to our region’s cultural landscape. This reading also commemorates 25 years since the play was first produced by Theatre South in 1987.

Congrats to our RAW Comedy and Class Clowns winners!
Hundreds of wannabe stand-up comedians from across the nation have worked their best five minutes in the spotlight as part of Melbourne International Comedy Festival's rolling rotisserie of RAW Comedy heats. The Wollongong heat winner, Cait Johnson, was thrilled with her win: "I'm stoked to have won RAW in Wollongong! It was really fun being on stage and was great to see all the comedians. I'm glad that I entered. Everyone was so supportive, especially the crowd, which made for an enjoyable night. [I'm] looking forward to seeing the semi-finals."
Melbourne International Comedy Festival also runs Class Clowns, a national secondary school comedy competition and workshop programme aimed at young people 14 - 17 years. The Wollongong heat was held on Saturday 10th March and we'd like to say a big congrats to the winner, Shayd Fegg from Wollongong High School, who performed fantastically alongside a wealth of comedy talent. Shayd will go on to the NSW State Final, to be held at the Powerhouse Museum on Saturday 24th March, with the winner flown to Melbourne for the Grand Final!
We wish Cait and Shayd all the best for the next round.
