Merrigong Theatre Company offers school groups the opportunity to go behind the scenes and discover how a theatre performance is developed, from ‘page to stage’. The following opportunities give students a unique insight into how stories are developed and realised in professional theatrical productions.

2018 Merrigong Kids, Families and Schools Brochure

Let's Make A Show
We produce at least one Mainstage show in-house each year and offer students the chance to be in the rehearsal room, engage with the artists and discover how professional theatre is created! In 2018, Let’s Make A Show is being offered with Lost Boys and is free to school groups that book to see the show. Bookings are essential as places are limited.

School Day Matinees
Merrigong offers numerous weekday matinee performances during the school term that make ideal school excursions. Most school day matinees include a post-show Q&A session to give students a deeper insight into the production and creative process.

Backstage Tours
Visit the backstage areas of our professional theatre venue that hosts national and international theatre, music and dance companies annually. See the secret machinations of the fly tower, where everything fits in the loading dock, what happens in the bio box and more!

Post-show Q&As
For most shows in our Mainstage Season we offer at least one performance where the audience is invited to stay for a conversation with the cast, and sometimes show creatives too. This is a perfect opportunity to gain deeper insights into a show and how it was made.

Merrigong Talking Points
Learn more about theatre, the arts and the wold around us! Everyone is invited to join our eclectic and engaging series of foyer talks designed to complement our season. Held after Saturday matinee performances of most Mainstage Season shows, Merrigong Talking Points are free and run for approximately one hour. No bookings required.

Sharing Stories
This intergenerational story-sharing project returns in 2018 to the Wollongong Town Hall. A heart-warming and joyous celebration of our First Nations’ community is produced in association with Wollongong City Council.

School & Vacation Care Bookings
We believe that all young people should enjoy the experience of professional live theatre and we do our best to keep the cost as low as possible, with heavily discounted tickets for all school and vacation care groups.

To book a 2018 show, please download the booking form, email us or phone  02 4224 5947. Click here to download the Risk Management Fact Sheet.

School students can learn more about the theatre and the performing arts by attending workshops. Visit the Workshops page for more details.

Ticket Subsidies
Ticket subsidies may be available through our Passport to Performance program for low social-economic public schools. Subsidies are limited and applied on a first-come first-served basis, so please note this on your booking form and submit it early to avoid disappointment.

Work Experience
We manage two of Australia’s busiest, most dynamic regional venues – Illawarra Performing Arts Centre and the Wollongong Town Hall. A limited number of week-long work experience placements are made available each year for students to participate in and observe the different departments in operation at Merrigong.
